Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

If they are not socialized properly, macaws can become aggressive and may even bite. It is crucial that boundaries are clearly defined to ensure that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds who enjoy playing, climbing and play. They must spend at least 2 to 3 hours a day outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They enjoy playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They also enjoy playing in parks and playgrounds as well as hiking and going to local restaurants and bars. Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, meaning males and females are difficult to distinguish. Lolita's Care
For years, activists have been pleading for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists hoped that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to go back to the sea.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also keep her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, vowed to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her eventually to open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary located on the west coast of Washington where she could stay for the remainder of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean not a concrete tank.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals that connect with their family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her retirement from Seaquarium's stage, and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

The orca, who was 57 years old, was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is endangered in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that some consider too small for her.
Lolita's Health

Despite the ongoing health issues there is a lot of hope that Lolita could be closer to living in the wild than before. The new owner of Seaquarium has pledged to transfer the whale out of her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.
The move comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean and even reunite with the orca believed to be her mother. Sadly, these plans came too late for the beloved whale, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal problem.
